About Reading Australian Rules Football

Reading Australian Rules Football is a website about the books, writing and art related to Australian Rules Football.  This code of football is played in Australia where it is the most popular form of football. Its origins can be traced to the 1850s. Since that time there have been many books, articles and other forms of expression such as films and songs chronicling and celebrating the game.
This website complements the book Reading Australian Rules Football: The Definitive Guide to the Game, (Tim Hogan, Editor). This book was published in February 2017 by Walla Walla Press and is now on sale from the Walla Walla website.

Scope of Reading Australian Rules Football

Reading Australian Rules Football is not a complete listing of every single book, article, film, or piece of writing or art related to football. Such a list would be very difficult to compile.  It is however a comprehensive record of writing about the game at all levels of competition. It includes the earliest books published in the late 19th century through until the latest publications of today. Books and writing in scholarly journals are covered extensively. Other content such as websites, films and music are covered much more selectively. Newspaper writing is not covered due to the vast volume of material produced. Older newspaper articles and reports published from the 1850s until 1954 can be searched and read on the national discovery gateway Trove.

This website was formerly called 'Reading the Game' and was originally a companion to a 2005 book Reading the Game which was an earlier version of Reading Australian Rules Football: The Definitive Guide to the Game.

About Me

I am the editor of Reading Australian Rules Football, and the creator of this website. My day job is a Librarian at the State Library of Victoria. Hope you find the footy book you are after.
